Considering different options for my light output for the project #2. These guys (also known as quantum dots) are too sexy, but expensive and possibly, only used in labs. I talked to Eric today about them and also asked if there are other malleable light sources I can use, so we’ll see.
The sensor matrix now works! I replaced the plastic material I thought was velostat with conductive foam and got it to work.

Different speed and angle
Even faster and less delay in between turns
I got my stepper motor to work; it was easier than I thought. I used these resources:
Instructions from garage developer’s blog.
Tom Igoe’s blog entry on controlling stepper motors.
Easy Driver’s website.
I’m not sure the moter will have enough torque to zip and unzip my giant zippers though.. (I’ll post my giant zipper pictures later on.) We’ll see.
Progress
Happy:
Believed in the positive feedback I got from teachers and friends and decided to go for building my zippers.
Ordered my zipper parts from a sailing store. They are coming in tomorrow or Tuesday.
Ordered and received my stepper motor (right before it got sold out!) and its driver. Started demystifying what stepper motor is and how to set it up.
Got a new camera for full on...

Shaping it
I’m leaning towards making 3 mini projects for my exploration of inbetweenness.
Where I will:
emphasize the paradox that you can never exist at two places at the same time and therefore, you will always be inbetween;
modify an object that exists in between two things/people/places;
create a new object that needs to exist inbetween.
I need to keep revising these descriptions.

Oh by the way blog/
I have a thesis statement now:
I want to explore the state of in-betweenness in relation to distance between two points. I’m aiming to create a series of artifacts that will try to reproduce the impossibility/inconceivability of existing at two points at the same time and magnify the necessity of distance in that context.
To be edited…
Mechanisms and prototypes
I’ve started working on a quick processing sketch for the do while undo-undo while do idea. I’m thinking of mechanisms to illustrate it. Friends think it’s a compelling idea. Seemed like my classmates also reacted to it more than the other ideas. I could see they were confused though. Midterm is on its way, I have to get going, make it cleaner and simpler and understandable and...

Dano advised me to watch this video this week. As soon as I started watching, I recognized the music, the narrator and the whole video! I remember seeing it in high school, either from the internet or perhaps a teacher showed it to us in class.. It’s a powerful video/puts things in perspective/makes you feel so unimportant/makes your problems look silly.
So I have this sort of idea.
I want to play with your sense of distance.
I want to obscure it, stretch it, twist it, double it, triple it, halve it.
I want you to think about your sense of distance.
So, what if I reversed your sense of distance?
What if when you thought things are getting closer, they are actually getting distant?
What if you didn’t know your sense of distance anymore?
I want you to think...
I wish...
…there was a such thing as a distance studies major.
On a very very unrelated note... →
One of the first articles I’m going to go back to after thesis.
What is distance for the rest of you? →
The extent of space between two objects or places; an intervening space.
The fact or condition of being apart in space; remoteness.
Mathematics. The length or numerical value of a straight line or curve.
Emotional separateness or reserve; aloofness.

I haven't done work for thesis at all today.
Time to get started.
What is distance for me?
Space.
Space between objects.
Space between people.
Space between objects and people.
The value that my eyes use to measure the space between me and another thing.
If something is far away from me, there is a distance from me to that object.
I carry distance with me all the time.
Home. (I want to leave when I’m there, I miss it when I’m away.)
Memories. (They get too distant...
Prototype.

Sensory systems of perception.
Sensory systems that make us make sense of the world around us.

I find this relevant, because I want my project to have a scientific feeling. I want my project to feel like an invention. My thesis must be an expedition!
